The Difference Between Trimming and Pruning
People use the terms interchangeably, but they’re not quite the same:
- Trimming focuses on clearance, safety, and appearance – taking off limbs that have grown into the wrong place, opening up sight lines, reducing weight on branches that have gotten heavy.
- Pruning focuses more on the tree’s long-term health and structure – removing dead, diseased, or weakly attached wood, developing strong structure in younger trees, opening the canopy for air and light.

Storm Prep Trimming Is Critical on the Treasure Coast
Hurricane season runs June through November in Florida, and the trees that fail in tropical storms almost always had warning signs months earlier – dead branches in the canopy, weak unions with included bark, long heavy lateral limbs over-leveraged on weak attachments, palms with rotting trunks. Storm prep trimming addresses these issues before the wind shows up.
Key things we look for during a pre-season trim:
- Dead and damaged limbs anywhere in the canopy.
- Weak V-shaped branch unions with bark turned inward.
- Codominant stems on mature trees – two trunks growing from one base.
- Long lateral limbs over-extended past their safe carrying capacity.
- Limbs hanging over the house, the pool screen, the driveway, or the dock.
- Palms with hangers – old fronds that haven’t released yet and will fly during high wind.
Trees that go into hurricane season properly trimmed are dramatically less likely to fail. It’s not a guarantee, but it’s the single most effective preventive measure you can take.
Pruning the Right Way
Bad pruning damages trees. Topping (cutting the top off to reduce height), flush cuts (cutting branches off flush with the trunk and removing the branch collar), and over-thinning all cause permanent damage. We don’t do any of those.
What we do:
- Crown cleaning – removing dead, dying, diseased, or broken branches throughout the canopy.
- Crown thinning – selectively reducing density to improve air and light, without over-thinning.
- Crown raising – lifting the lower canopy for clearance over walkways, driveways, or sight lines.
- Crown reduction – actual proper reduction (cutting back to lateral branches that can take over as new leaders), not topping.
- Structural pruning – shaping young trees to develop strong structure for the next 50 years. One of the highest-value services available and one homeowners rarely know exists.
Palm Trimming
Florida palms need their own approach. Sabal palms (cabbage palms), royal palms, queen palms, washingtonias, foxtails, coconuts, date palms – each has different trimming needs and different timing. Over-pruning palms (“hurricane cut” – stripping all but a few fronds at the top) is actively damaging despite the name; it stresses the palm and makes it more vulnerable, not less.
Proper palm trimming removes dead and dying fronds, old fruit stalks, and hangers, while leaving enough live frond mass for the palm to stay healthy. We’re palm specialists, and palm trimming is one of the most common services we provide on the Treasure Coast.
When to Trim on the Treasure Coast
Florida’s growing season is essentially year-round, which changes the timing rules. General guidelines:
- Most hardwoods (oaks, magnolias, mahoganies): late winter (January through early March) is ideal for structural pruning.
- Live oaks specifically: avoid pruning from February through July to reduce risk of oak wilt transmission.
- Palms: any time of year, though late spring before hurricane season is the most common.
- Flowering trees (jacaranda, frangipani, royal poinciana, dogwood, redbud): right after their main bloom.
- Hazardous or storm-damaged limbs: any time, as soon as identified – never wait.
